Our Story
About Birmingham Deck & Fence
Scott Carter has been in the construction trade since 1985. Today he builds decks and fences for Birmingham families.

There’s no substitute for hard work.
In 1985, my friend’s father gave me a shot at working for his company, building houses. Over time, I learned just about everything there was about the construction business, and I loved every minute of it.
The more I learned, the more I wanted to learn. It motivated me to go to college. I earned my first degree in building construction from Bessemer State and my second degree in CAD from Walker State.
The idea of making something out of nothing has never gotten old. I knew I could never work in an office or sit still long enough to fiddle with a computer all day. Being outside and building stuff with my hands is all I ever wanted.
For 15 years, I kept my head down, working just about as much as I could and taking all the overtime the boss would give me. My plan was to save my pennies and open my own business one day.
In 2001, I was finally ready. I had a beat-up truck, every tool you could imagine, and the promise I made to myself to never have to work for anyone else again.
The best advice I got from anyone growing up came from my family. They said “if you wanna do it, do it” and “if you want it bad enough, you’ll figure it out.”
They were right. I did want it badly enough, and I did figure it out. For the past 25 years, we’ve been serving Birmingham with hard work and real results. My guess is that we’re doing something right because people tell their friends and neighbors about us.
And we haven’t slowed down one bit, but we did change our focus. These days, it’s all about the backyard and family. That’s why we’re dialed in on decks and fences.
If you’re thinking your backyard would be better with a new deck and upgraded fence your probably right. Now the only question is, what are you waiting for?
Sincerely,

Rome Had Pergolas Before America Had States The Romans planted climbing vines over carved stone archways to shade their garden walkways more than 2,000 years ago. The word “pergola” comes from the Latin “pergula,” meaning a projecting roof or vine-covered walkway.
About Birmingham Deck & Fence In Birmingham
You ask.
We answer.
Birmingham Deck & Fence has been building decks in the Birmingham area for more than 25 years and has been in construction overall since 1985. That longevity means the company has built through Birmingham’s full range of weather cycles, soil conditions, and neighborhood development phases. Scott Carter and the Birmingham Deck & Fence team bring decades of hands-on construction knowledge to every project in the metro area.
Yes, Birmingham Deck & Fence is a family-owned operation based in Birmingham, Alabama. Family ownership means the business reputation is directly tied to the quality of every project, which is one reason the company backs its work with a satisfaction guarantee. Homeowners in Birmingham, Homewood, Mountain Brook, and across the metro area are working directly with the people who own and operate the business.
Birmingham Deck & Fence is fully licensed and insured in Alabama for residential deck, fence, and porch construction. Licensing and insurance protect the homeowner in the event of an on-site incident and confirm the contractor meets Alabama’s standards for residential construction work. All projects in the service area, from Birmingham proper to Pelham and Trussville, are covered under the company’s active policy.
The satisfaction guarantee means Birmingham Deck & Fence stands behind the quality of its work after the project is complete. If something is not right with the finished product, the company addresses it. This commitment matters especially in the Birmingham area where outdoor structures face real stress from 56+ inches of annual rain, summer heat, and the clay soil conditions that affect the long-term performance of posts and framing.
Owning equipment rather than renting it means Birmingham Deck & Fence is not dependent on third-party rental availability, which keeps project timelines on track across the Birmingham metro area. It also reflects the kind of long-term investment a contractor makes when they plan to be in business for decades rather than operating as a short-term operation. This has been part of how the company has operated since Scott Carter founded it in the mid-1980s.
Four decades in Birmingham construction means Scott Carter and the Birmingham Deck & Fence team have worked through two major economic cycles, the aftermath of the April 27, 2011 tornado outbreak, and the evolution of the residential building market from the urban core neighborhoods to the growing suburbs in Chelsea, Trussville, and Helena. That experience informs every design and material recommendation the company makes for local homeowners. Knowing Birmingham’s soil, terrain, and weather from direct experience is different from reading about it.
Birmingham Deck & Fence commits to a next-day response on all new estimate requests submitted through birminghamdeckandfence.com. The company operates Monday through Friday from 8am to 6pm and Saturday from 9am to 6pm. Free estimates are available for all services across the full Birmingham metro service area.
A local contractor who has operated in Birmingham since the 1980s knows Jefferson County permit requirements, local soil conditions, HOA guidelines in communities like Greystone and Ross Bridge, and the terrain challenges in hilly neighborhoods like Redmont Park and Highland Park. A regional chain applies standard practices from other markets that may not account for Birmingham’s specific conditions. Birmingham Deck & Fence is built around this area and does not operate elsewhere.
Birmingham Deck & Fence has been in construction since 1985, giving the company a depth of local experience with Birmingham’s soil, terrain, and weather that newer contractors have not had time to develop. The company is licensed, insured, family-owned, and backs its work with a satisfaction guarantee. These are not marketing claims but operational standards the business has maintained for over 40 years of construction in the Birmingham area.
Visit birminghamdeckandfence.com to submit an estimate request and the team will respond the next business day. Estimates are free for all project types, including decks, fences, porches, and outdoor structure repairs. Birmingham Deck & Fence serves homeowners across Birmingham, Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, Homewood, Hoover, Trussville, Chelsea, Helena, and Pelham.
